Good evening, kind friends.
I have extensively read through more information on XDA forums than I possibly should have. This morning my wife demanded who the Ms Shroff is that I was referring to my sleep. No amount of convincing her that the confusion with S-OFF is troubling me and I was indeed still regrettably focused only on software and rooting.
I posted a request for information and included the getvar but have no responses thus far. That's alright. Nobody really owes me one. ( or it could be my request was rather ridiculous and not worth the response) That's OK too.
However I wonder if the system at XDA could be cleaned up a bit. Instructions on ( for example) the HTC M7 return to stock, is so fragmented, it is mind boggling. RUU, ROMs, OTA files and such are spread all over the place, some links lead to dead ends. From a newbie's POV, understanding this site is more strenuous than achieving world peace. Even the main Forum page does not clearly indicate where things could be posted. Contradictory instructions, outdated information ( thing the S-OFF/ON switch is now not possible without forking out $ 25 to some dev , who if one googles, has had patchy success with the process- or maybe I read this wrong- who knows), and worst of all, the 13 page threads with several distinct cases.
Now, I totally understand that putting this site together, getting volunteers to help newbies like me ( for no compensation except a big thank you, that does not pay the bills) is very difficult. But given the growing popularity of Android and the willingness of many to play with their expensive toys, I think XDA is up to something really big- and I mean "hundreds of millions of dollar buyout" big, in the next 5 years. If only it were less confusing, more would join, it would rank super high online and that's real value.
Perhaps a big clean up effort would be appropriate. Tons of delations ( maybe even my post!) would be in order. Perhaps forums dedicated to a certain model. Maybe stickies that do not change, and edited only by experts would be great clear guides to what needs to be done. This site does not need Advil, it could use Chemo. To cleanse it of the conflicting posts, and make it simple, easy to find and a magnet for all newbies. Perhaps even a video section on Rooting, Unlocking and relocking etc. The Gold List of RUU. ROM. etc etc.
What convinced me even more is that we now have sites like HTCGuru and Android Forums addressing the shortcomings of XDA by opening their own sites. If that is not a sign that XDA needs a full revamp, I wonder what is.
The information we seek, is there someplace in these forums, I am convinced. But like a unaligned magnet, the forces are fighting each other. Once cleaned, this forum will be strong and vibrant. The hard part- getting folks to come here en masse for a real technical need- is done, folks. That is the GOLD. Remember anyone who roots and unlocks his 600$ device is technically bent. Do you realize that person will also be interested in other tech business. The possibilities are endless folks. The hard part is over!
Thank you for your time and consideration.
