Unlocking and Rooting Galaxy Nexus topic

Hi I am a newbie when it comes to unlocking and rooting my phone. I have the Verizon Galaxy nexus and I have tried a lot of methods to get the unlock part done first but the problem I am having is my windows usb continuously makes that on and off noise. Could it be because its Windows and Google and Android don't like each other? My phone has a extended battery from Androidcentral.com and its dieing fast. I think I need a good new rom to make the battery life better I am still on Jellybean. I have tried battery apps but my phone dies really fast. If I can get the windows USB to connect right I would be ok for the unlock part. Please help me with USB help so I can get past that.
