TPToolbox stuck on "Checking novacom service ..." topic

I've got java and novacom installed. The novacom service is running. The TP is connected and in the right mode. I'm on Windows 7 64bit, a fresh install since I last used TPToolbox, but it's the same OS... This is driving me nuts. I've tried three different versions of TPToobox and various other random things I could think of.
